1. Understanding Your Style and Preferences
Before you start searching for the perfect wedding dress, it’s essential to reflect on your personal style and preferences.
It may seem trivial until you've tried on a dress, but choosing is also about closing doors and eliminating options to find the dress that makes your heart (and your partner’s) skip a beat.
So take some time to identify:
- The shapes, cuts, fabrics, colors, and details that you desire.
- Conversely, pinpoint what you dislike.
What impression do you want to convey on this very special day? How do you want to appear
Are you romantic or fashion-forward?
Are you discreet or original?
Are you simple or glamorous?
Defining Your Personal Style
To determine your personal style, try to define how far you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone for this unique day.
Some women may prefer to stay with simplicity.
Others may want to make a statement with an incredible look.
Our advice: you should find the right balance between “what you’re used to wearing daily” and the exceptional nature of this day.
If you start with designs that are too basic, you’ll likely feel that there’s always something "missing" during your fittings. The idea is to aim for a step above (without, of course, feeling like you’re in a costume).

Define the Theme of Your Wedding
Once your personal style is established, consider how it could fit into the theme of your wedding.
You don’t have to have a theme, of course, but if you do (bohemian, rustic, chic, etc.), it can be interesting to imagine how your outfit will harmonize with your venue, the season, the decoration, and the atmosphere of your day.
Think about how you want to appear as you walk down the aisle, whether it’s in a church or a garden, for a religious or secular ceremony.
Also, consider practicality: if your wedding is taking place with your feet in the sand on the beach, your dress should avoid being too voluminous and heavy.
If you’re looking forward to dancing, opt for a fluid and lightweight dress (or a second, more comfortable dress for the end of the evening).
2. Defining the Shapes That Suit Your Silhouette
At Les Filles Fidèles, we’re not fans of statements like "You have this body type, so you need this shape."
Simply because we see clients every week choosing dresses that "shouldn't suit them" in theory, yet perfectly match their style and personality in reality.
However, certain silhouettes are generally enhanced by specific shapes. Knowing your body shape can help eliminate some categories of dresses to refine your selection.
- An A-line silhouette can emphasize a more detailed top.
- An 8 or X silhouette might prefer a dress that cinches at the waist to hide certain curves or, conversely, highlight your shape with a fitted, sheath, or mermaid dress.
- A V-shaped silhouette might choose a voluminous skirt to create visual balance.
- An H or lean silhouette might also add volume rather than sticking to a dress that’s too streamlined.
After your research at home, you are now ready to start your fittings in the boutique with a clearer idea of your desires and needs.
Stay open-minded, as fittings often bring delightful surprises.
3. Consider Your Budget
Planning the budget for your wedding dress is crucial.
It will likely go over, you can be (almost) sure of that 😀
Therefore, it is essential to determine in advance an amount you are willing to invest in your outfit to avoid unpleasant surprises or disappointments.
This will help you avoid choosing boutiques with amazing dresses costing 5000 euros if your budget is limited to 2000 euros, for example.
If you fall in love with a dress that costs 2300 euros, you might be able to afford the extra boost for the dress of your dreams (whereas at 5000 euros, you'll only have your tears to cry).
Here are some tips for setting a realistic budget and finding a beautiful dress while staying reasonable.
Establishing a Realistic Budget
If you don't have an unlimited budget, start by defining your priorities.
What value do you place on your dress compared to other wedding expenses (number of guests, venue, meal...)?
Would you be willing to reduce the budget allocated to other areas such as decoration, flowers, or catering to get the perfect dress?
Or do you wish to balance the costs among all elements of the ceremony?
Also, think about additional costs not included in the initial price of the dress: accessories, alterations, cleaning, and transportation.
Allow for some flexibility for these additional expenses.
Stay pragmatic about your budget: it is not necessary to aim too low or beyond your financial means.
Although the average cost of a wedding dress ranges between 1200 and 2000 euros, there are plenty of options, with low-cost models under 1000 euros and high-end dresses starting at 2000 euros and going up indefinitely.
The important thing is to find a dress that you love without compromising your financial health.
Exploring Various Price Options
Once your budget is established, you can start searching for the ideal dress.
Several alternatives are available to you:
-
Online Shopping: Ordering from wedding e-commerce sites can help you get your dress quickly with a smaller budget. Be cautious about the quality and credibility of sellers. However, online shopping will never replace trying on dresses in a boutique to understand which shapes and materials suit you best.
- Second-Hand or Outlet Shopping: Buying a dress from an outlet can be an opportunity to get designer creations at reduced prices. The limitation is that each dress is often available in only one size and one exemplar.
- Boutique or Showroom: If you prefer a new dress tailored exactly to your size, you will need to visit a boutique or showroom. Some wedding stores offer ready-to-wear dresses (sizes 34, 36, 38, 40, 42...) and generally provide alterations to make your dress fit perfectly. At Les Filles Fidèles, we create dresses tailored to your measurements, considering 12 parameters. Lastly, some workshops and designers will design your dress from scratch based on your style and material preferences.
4. Plan Ahead
The key to finding the ideal wedding dress lies in planning!
When unfamiliar with the wedding world, it may seem like there is plenty of time. In reality, the production times are at least 6 months (sometimes 9 or even 12 for certain designers).
At Les Filles Fidèles, we need 3 and a half months (plus, of course, a little margin so you don’t receive your dress the week before your ceremony).
So, schedule your boutique visits as early as possible (far from being an unpleasant task, it's an experience in itself) to avoid stress and additional costs.
Here are some tips to help you organize well before the big day and ensure everything goes smoothly:
Scheduling Fittings
Start searching for your dress about 9 to 12 months before your wedding to give yourself enough time to try and compare different styles and explore boutiques in your city (or elsewhere).
Book your appointments in advance with the selected boutiques, as they can be very busy during peak wedding season.
Some boutiques only receive clients by appointment, so a prior reservation is necessary.
For the fittings, be accompanied by trusted loved ones who will provide sincere and useful feedback.
Opt for a small group (from our perspective, 2 to 3 companions max is ideal) consisting of your bridesmaids, parents, and friends to avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many differing opinions.
Even if you have a style in mind, stay open to trying different cuts of dresses. You might be pleasantly surprised and led to unexpected choices.
Prioritize your personal preferences (it’s your dress and you’ll be the one wearing it), your feelings, and your intuition. You need to feel comfortable and radiant in your wedding attire.
Don’t worry, when it’s the right one, you’ll know (even if you sleep on it before making your final decision).
5. Seek Professional Advice
